Living Photo Booth project photos 2010 - Mermaid Parade Ball, Coney Island

This year's Living Photo Booth was amazingly fun, with over 1500 photos at the end of the over 8 hour shoot. We are still calculating how many people participated, but it looks like at least several hundred.

I am very honored to be a part of the summer solstice celebration every year, and am excited to keep this project going. This was the 6th year.

Here are a few picks of the series, more are coming soon, along with a new website devoted to the project. 2009 (last year's images - ) are already up and ready, we are busy bees over here making sure every image from Saturday is getting the care and attention it deserves - then uploading them as we go. If we don't have everything completed by tomorrow, we will do a partial posting of what is complete at that time.

POOL ART FAIR at the Gershwin Hotel. Come get wet!

I will be showing six mermaid prints at the Pool Art Fair - opening from 6pm to 9 pm tonight. Room 1032. Hope you can come join me - this weekend is shaping up to be a ot of fun. The show tonight is called Bodies and Other. A really great selection of great artists are in the show. I am proud to be a part of it! From statement on the series:

Hendler authored an annual photo event/sociological project she calls the “Living Photo Booth” at each year’s Mermaid Parade, capturing hundreds of mermaid parade participants in her Photo Booth. These images capture ideas of temporality, costume, acting out, mirage, sexuality, illusion, and play. The project as a whole has both an artistic and sociological benefit for the investigation of taboo, boundaries of social and private life and subcultures, held within the confines of Hendler’s constructed stage each year. The project is a living document of Coney Island and the people who participate in the events each year, as well as being of continued interest for sociologists, anthropologists, and historians interested in Coney Island.

Part of a yearlong series of single-evening salon events in artist’s studios. These were originally envisioned as a response to the current trend in pop-up exhibitions in vacant spaces, which typically generate interest only during the reception. This is because institutions such as galleries and museums impose a certain cultural authorities that pop-up spaces do not. Yet another sort of space inhabits the art community which also possesses cultural authority: the artist’s studio.

I have been working on something new that will be in a show in San Fransisco over February....About "precious things" as David Gibson mentioned when I showed him the new work.

Thanks to Rachael Jablo, my old friend for putting me in the show. The show is called "SICK" and it opens at Root Division on Feb 10th.

Here are some of the new works. They will likely be shown mounted on plexi in small order.

In order of appearance below are some favorites, though there are many more - carnelian, sapphires, and pills, pearls, quartz and pills, gold, treated topaz and pills, and moonstones and pills. - Elize

Thanks for everyone who participated in the Living Photo Booth this past summer. In anticipation of the quincentennial, for 2010, I will be launching a site that will have all the past year's shots up that can be purchased. A part of the proceeds will go back to Coney Island USA who is the group who puts on the parade every year. Other funds will go to cover costs of printing and doing this project every year! I hope to see you next year. - Elizabeth

Join me at the Mermaid Parade this weekend, Saturday, June 20th for Mermaids and frolicking. I will be doing in some fashion my Living Photo Booth project for the Mermaid Parade - at the start of the parade this year, instead of at the Ball. You can get your picture taken BEFORE you go through the hot sun and all your make up melts off! Hooray! I will be posting photos for the benefit we do every year for Coney Island USA, and the Coney Island Museum. This will be my 5th year running of mermaid photos, so see you there! As always, I am honored to be a part of this community, and to document these historic times.

My Copyright video piece from 1995, where I copyrighted my body, was shown on a barge exhibit in Spain. I recently reshot the piece and made the final version in split screen. The updated piece was shown again in Spain as part of the moving boat exhibit "Copilandia", a Gratis project through the Sevilla Entre Culturas Festival, Centro de Arte de Sevilla in Spain. Thanks to Kirby Gookin and Robin Kahn for including me in the exhibit!
